LIKE MANY PEOPLE in the Development profession, Patrick entered the field accidentally. He was trained as a journalist (School of Journalism, University of Montana 1980) and worked five years in that profession. In the early 80s he made a transition into health care public relations. In his second position in that field Patrick was given the assignment of managing a capital campaign. It was such a rich experience for him that he decided his next position would be a full time development job. Now he’s been in that field more than 20 years.
Patrick has five years of health care fund raising experience at two institutions; five years in human services; and 10 years in higher education. During this time he has been involved in four capital campaigns and had executive responsibility for two of these.
The first half of his development career Patrick spent working for small to medium-sized non profits in small to medium-sized cities and the second half working for larger development organizations mostly in a major metropolitan area. His work on behalf of these institutions has taken him to nearly every major metropolitan area in the United States.
TRANSFERRING EXPERTISE. Because of his past training, Patrick’s work in development has always included a healthy dose of writing, primarily for strategic communications. He was fortunate to work under the guidance of a senior development officer at one institution where he was responsible for writing (over the signature of the CEO) compelling proposals to corporation and foundation grantors.
Major, principal and planned gifts fund raising has been a real passion in recent years. Patrick believes his Major Gifts experience in larger institutions can be adapted to address the needs of small to medium sized non profits. While this now is the focus of his practice at MajorGiftsMT, his experience base covers nearly every sub-specialty of fund development including annual fund, corporation and foundation, development information systems, and comprehensive communications.
